Sony PC plays SACDs and can upgrade old recordings

PCs: Sony VAIO JS1 Series All-in-One is Audiophile Ready

“Sony's latest JS1 all-in-one is really a nice looking machine, but it's packing a lot of interesting tech as well. Packing a 20.1" 1680x1050 display, the Core2Duo system holds 3GB of memory and 500GB of storage. Audio plays through Dolby-based virtual surround sound and Sony’s integrated Sound Reality chip can record, edit and play back SA-CD music. You remember super audio CDs, right? The only slight disappointment was that the system has no optional Blu-ray integration, which would have been media overkill in the best way. No word on pricing or availability.

……

This can handle Super Audio CD (SA-CD), allowing the JS1 to record, edit and play music at SA-CD quality, and even upgrade older recordings to the new standard.”

So, SACDs could be ripped as 24-bit audio? I thought that might never be possible.

I don't see why they couldn't. It's probably more of a copy protection scheme why you don't see it done in audio devices. My Oppo 980 can output DSD or hi-rez PCM over HDMI and I believe the Oppo 981 and Oppo 983 can output hi-rez PCM over HDMI (they convert the DSD to PCM). I'm waiting to see what the new Oppo Blu-Ray player will do and what the new Bryston pre/pro will do (probably both will be available around Feb. give or take a bit) before I have my Marantz DV9600 universal modded. If SACDs either passed as DSD or PCM into the Bryston (depending if they offer DSD decoding) sound better from the upcoming Oppo vs. the DV9600, I won't waste the time or money having it modded. When I get a new bedroom rec'r I'll probably spring for one that does DSD so I can output the Oppo 980 into it and compare it to the Sony 2000ES CD/SACD changer. If doing that makes the Oppo closer or better in sound quality on SACD vs. the 2000ES, I can move the 2000ES to the basement system.

I'd be curious to know if its possible to rip SACDs to a harddrive. I'm currently setting up a fileserver and ripping all cds and dvds to it (hope to put together an HTPC running XBMC soon). I haven't looked into how to rip SACDs yet though, if its just a copy protection scheme, I'd assume its been broken (even BD+ has already been defeated)

AFAIK, it's never been broken.

There is software that can convert DSD to hi-rez PCM but it ain't cheap:

Weiss Saracon DSD - PCM and DSD Sampling Rate Conversion Software for PC/Mac | VintageKing.com

I've copied single layer SACDs to CD quality. That is accomplished easily. I have a home CD recorder in the tape loop of my preamp. The only thing it really does it allows me to listen to the CD in the car at CD quality. For hybrid SACDs, it is just easier to rip the CD layer. I've gotten over the need to have hi-rez except in the home systems. The car environment is too noisy and even though I have real speakers (powered by a receiver) and a small sub for the PC, the quality is not something I'm going to hear that much of. There are a bunch of 24/96 DVDs which can pass the resolution over a coax cable and if you have the hardware you can capture it. Neil Young's Greatest Hits 4, Live at Massey Hall 1971 and Mellencamp's last album are a few examples of hi-rez 24/96 audio on std. DVDs
